The Real St. Nicholas
The real St. Nicholas was a 4th century bishop of Myra, a small community then located in what is now modern-day Turkey. He was known for his generosity and often visited the poor and sick to provide them with help and comfort. Over time, stories of his generosity spread and he was honored as a saint, becoming known as St. Nicholas or St. Nick.
The Red-Suited Santa
The familiar image of Santa as a white-bearded, portly man who wears a red suit and hat originated in 19th century United States. Prior to this, Santa was depicted in much more colorful clothing and with various types of facial hair. The first use of the red clothing is often attributed to the poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” by Clement Clarke Moore.
