Online Games – Fun for Everyone

What are Online Games?

At its simplest, an online game is any type of game that can be played in an online setting. This can include MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role-playing games), MOBA (multiplayer online battle arenas), browser-based games, flash games, as well as downloadable games. Most online games are designed to be experienced as a single-player experience, but more recently games have been created to be played in a multiplayer environment, allowing players to interact with each other in real-time from across the globe.

Advantages of Online Games

Along with the convenience of being able to access some of the best gaming experiences from any device with a web connection, there are many advantages to playing online games:

Multiplayer interaction – Unlike board games, online games allow you to play with people from around the world and many times even participate in international tournaments.

Cost – Some online games are free-to-play while others offer subscription fees or in-game purchases. This new option can keep costs lower than traditional gaming and allow you to try out a game before committing to a larger purchase.

Social connections – Online games have become a great way to keep in touch with friends and make new ones, as well as having an outlet for stress release. The online gaming community is large and growing, with platforms such as Discord and Twitch allowing for communication and live streaming of gameplay.

Accessibility – Many online games are accessible for a variety of levels of gaming experience, allowing even the novice player to enjoy the experience. Many games also provide tutorials and coach players through the game mechanics which can help to improve the players’ capabilities.

Types of Online Games

Browser-Based Games

Browser-based games are accessible from any device with an internet connection, such as a smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop, and can be played on any operating system including Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. These types of games are either completely browser-based, meaning they are accessed through the browser, or use the browser-plugin architecture and require the user to install a plugin such as Flash Player, Unity or Adobe Shockwave Player.

MMORPGs are massive online role-playing games, where players explore expansive worlds, gain levels, build skills, and battle monsters and/or each other. MMORPGs are popular and feature world-building elements and progress tracking. They typically require a subscription fee, but many offer bonus time with in-game purchases. World of Warcraft is perhaps the most popular MMORPG.

Multiplayer Online Battle Arenas, or MOBAs, are team-based competitive games, based around strategy and quick thinking. The games are typically fast-paced and require players to work together as a diverse team. League of Legends and DOTA 2 are two of the most popular MOBAs and feature fast-paced play, a character-driven system, and intense team battles.

Flash Games

Flash games are popular browser-based games that typically require no download or additional plugins to play. These games are mostly simple mini-games or puzzle games, ranging from logic puzzles to arcade games to side-scrolling shooters. Flash games can be played in-browser or downloaded and installed on the player’s device.

Downloadable Games

Downloadable games can be installed on the players device and run without needing an internet connection. They can range from large AAA titles to simple time-wasters and can be purchased on platforms such as Steam, GOG, and Origin. These types of games are often more feature rich and well designed than browser-based games, but require a larger investment to experience.

Tips for Playing Online Games

Ensure Secure Login Procedures

Security is a major issue when it comes to online gaming. Choose secure passwords and be sure to regularly update them. Make sure your computer is free from viruses and malware by running regular scans, and consider enabling 2-factor authentication for extra protection.

Monitor Play Times

It is easy to get lost in the action when playing an online game, so be sure to set play limits for yourself and keep an eye on your time. Make sure you take regular breaks away from your gaming, especially when playing for extended periods of time.

Understand the Rules

Read up on the specific games you are playing and make sure you’re familiar with the rules, understand the scoring system and have a good grasp of what makes a good strategy. Most importantly, follow the rules of good sportsmanship, be respectful to other players, and remember to have fun!

Online games offer a great way to pass the time and have fun with friends, as well as connect with players across the globe. With platforms such as Twitch and Discord, the online gaming community has grown rapidly, and provides a great opportunity to interact with others who share the same interests in gaming. With the variety and accessibility of online games, there is something for everyone – all you have to do is find the game that suits your style.
